Overweight and obesity are causing health crisis in Australia

Across the world, as well as in Australia, the proportion of people who are overweight or obese is epidemic and causing a health crisis. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among Australians has been steadily increasing for the past 30 years, doubling in the last 20 years. Around 60% of adults (68% men) and around 25% of children are overweight or obese that is 3 in 5 adults  and 1 in 4 children in Australia. That's over 14 million people!

Overweight and obesity is only beaten by smoking and high blood pressure as a contributor to the burden of disease causing premature death and illnesses. Excess weight, especially obesity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions and some cancers. As the level of excess weight increases, so does the risk of developing these conditions. Furthermore, being overweight can interfere with the ability to control or manage other chronic disorders. In addition, being overweight/obese can result in mental health issues such as depression, eating disorders, distorted body image, and low self-esteem.

If you believe that because you are over-weight your physical or mental health is affected, you can visit your GP for an assessment for a Mental Health Treatment Plan for weight loss and a referral so you can claim the Medicare rebate.
